“Yooooo Joe!!” How many of you remember that? I remember running around the neighborhood with my buddies, each of us screaming that phrase as we hunted down the evil Cobra Commander. We would always fight over who got to be Snake Eyes & Duke, & of course we always made neighborhood tag along be Scarlett. We all had a bunch of various action figures (the 3 3/4″ figures will always be the best ones) & some of the vehicles that we would gather up around the TV so we could watch the cartoon. Needless to say, G.I. Joe made a big impact on a lot of childeren of the 80’s. Granted, Joe has been around for 45 years, but his birth is long before my time…
Flash forward to 2009. A movie based on the G.I. Joe franchise is going to be released (after being in development on & off since 2003). Set up to be a big end of summer action film, it’s ecpected to launch a full movie franchise. Not to be outdone by Hollywood, Electronic Arts is planning a franchise of their own with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Set right after the film of the same name, Rise of Cobra isn’t limiting itself to the movies assets. It’ll draw from all 45 years of Joe history.
The game will initially support 16 playable character (4 of which are Cobra) including Snake Eyes, Duke, Heavy Duty, Ripcord, Scarlett, Shipwreck and Gung Ho. Players will be able to tackle the 3rd person shooter on their own, or with a friend (locally) in their quest to stop Cobra’s latest plan at world domination. You’ll have to traverse 20 levels (each with about 3-5 sections) to get through it though & put an end to Cobra. You’ll also have an array of gadgets to play with, including the Accelerator Suit from the film. Of course, the classic characters didn’t have to do everything on foot, so neither will you. The game will feature plenty of vehicles created with co-op in mind, so no awkward fighting over who gets shotgun.
For me, I’m a classic Joe fan (wow, am I that old that my toys are classics now?). So when I heard that part of the unlockable bonus content would be some of the classic Public Service Announcements (PSAs) from the 1980’s cartoon series, I was stoked! Basically there will be 75 different intellegence items to find throughout the game. These will unlock special characters, missions, the PSAs, etc… Plus, there will be classic costumes! Check out the trailer below for the Xbox 360 & PS3 versions. There’s also a version releasing for the Wii, DS, PSP, PS2, & mobile phones. I should have a review for you soon. The last thing you’ll want to know is that it launches next Tuesday on August 4th. And knowing is half the battle…
