I woke up to news this morning that Disney had purchased Marvel Entertainment for 4 billion in cash & stock. That definitely came out of left field for me as I didn’t realize Marvel was on the market. The deal would put Disney as the owner of the entire Marvel portfolio, which amounts to over 5000 characters. At this point, the brands appear to be maintained as separate entities. Who knows how things will play out in 5 or 10 years. In specific reference to video games, current development deals such as the ones with Activision, Sega, THQ & Gazillion Entertainment will stay in place & won’t be reconsidered until they expire. Once they have expired, then Disney says they will reconsider its options & do what’s best for the properties. In today’s rough economic times, consolidation with big entities is a safe way to keep the business going in lieu on going under entirely (no, I’m NOT saying that Marvel was in trouble, just making a general statement). So I think its a smart move on Marvels part. Twitter on the other hand, feels a bit different. I have seen a wide berth of reactions from jubilant to outraged. What do you think? Is this a bad move? What concerns do you have about your favorite Disney/Marvel properties?
