My Pick of the Week for this week’s new DVD releases is Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown). It stars Kristen Stewart (Jumper), Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), & Billy Burke (Untraceable). Here is the synopsis:
TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect much of anything to change.
Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she’s ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands – and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal.
But he doesn’t have fangs, and he doesn’t drink human blood; Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for – a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward & Bella do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), the Cullens’ mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her?
I watched this not too long ago. The story is based on a book of the same name written by Stephenie Meyer. It is the first in a series of 4 books telling the story of Bella. A fifth book is being written that is said to tell the Twilight story from Edward’s point of view. The books are hugely popular. I have heard it described as Harry Potter for teen girls. I can’t say I found anything really remarkable about the story except the different take on vampires. Stephanie Meyer broke most of the traditions of vampire lore which did make things a little more interesting. But in the end, what struck me about the film was the casting & the vision of the director. First, all the actors/actresses are pretty. In the entire Twilight world on film, there are no ugly people. Second was the look of the film. The subtle shifts in color. The change in skin tones depending on the scene. The camera angles. Even the music made the film into something I experienced more than I watched. My only complaint was that I didn’t really get into the story itself. Would I watch it again? Probably. Will I watch the planned sequels? Sure. The second book, New Moon, should be filming now. I believe they are looking to get it out by the end of the year with the 3rd film, Eclipse, to be released summer 2010. Twilight will be released on DVD & Blu-Ray on Saturday, March 21st.
