The whole Neftflix launch on the Playstation 3 felt rushed. I mean, seriously, if you already plan to integrate it into the XMB, then wait on releasing the service until that functionality is ready to go. Don’t rush out a streaming disk with the promise of XMB integration sometime next year. I’m kind of eating a bit of crow here because one of the things I have been nailing Sony on is that they seem to take forever to get the features the players are asking for. With Netflix, they seemed to bring it out before they were ready so it felt more like a “me too, I have it too” kind of thing. Now, with the new firmware update (version 3.10), they are bringing Facebook to the XMB. When Microsoft first announced their Facebook app at E3, Sony & Nintendo both said that it wasn’t a big deal because you can already do that on their consoles through the web browser. Now, coincidentally on the same day that Microsoft rolls out Facebook to all their installed base, we get confirmation that Sony has gone one step further & integrated Facebook into the XMB. I have a few questions. Are they doing this just to counter the Microsoft roll out? Is the demand for Facebook that big that they need to put their resources into adding it to the XMB in lieu of another app, like Netflix for example? To be honest, it just feels like another “me too” move. Hopefully Sony will have a bit more functionality in their Facebook attempt than Microsoft has in theirs. The update seems to be focused completely on Facebook since the rest of the changes are minor at best like a grid-based view of pics on your console & colored backgrounds on the PSN ID cards. Thoughts?…
