War has always been big business. I mean, a lot of credit goes to WWII for getting the US out of the Great Depression not to mention the money companies like Haliburton have made off our time in the Middle East over the last 15 years. Well, it turns out that war is very profitable in video games as well. With the recent smash success of Modern Warfare 2, along with the success of the previous game as well, publishers are taking note that WWII is finally dead & gamers want a more modern experience (personally, I would rather see a few games in the late Cold War/mid 80’s setting, but that’s just me
). Medal of Honor started the whole WWII FPS craze back in the mid 90’s (the first few games were favorites of mine). But, when the developers split away from EA & began their own franchise (take one guess which one THAT was), the series faded away. I’ve seen many arguments as to why it fell from grace, but for me, I think it just didn’t evolve the same way the competition did. After a bit of a hiatus, the brand is back & looks like it may finally get the makeover it deserves. First, WWII is done. EA has brought it to the here & now by setting it in Afghanistan & placing the player as a Tier 1 Operator, “a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle”. Sounds like black ops. Anyway, everything points to a strong focus on the single player component of the game, the part I felt was the weakest in Modern Warfare 2, which may give the title a decided edge over the competition. Don’t worry though, multiplayer will be present & accounted for, with DICE taking the development reigns (for those not familiar, DICE is the group who masterminded the massively successful Battlefield franchise). The official site is up (which you can check out here) & the teaser vid is posted below for you (along with the cover art for the PS3 version). Look for more on it at the Spike VGAs airing on Dec 12th…
