Sony Provides Free ‘Tester’

Sony Provides Free ‘Tester’

In a world filled with obsessive voyeurs, does it come as a surprise to see gaming become a focus in the reality show genre? While it isn’t the first one to be gamer-centric (Ultimate Gamer comes immediately to mind), Sony’s The Tester has to be one of the least appealing of the bunch. Basically, Sony is offering a chance to become a game tester for their first party dev house (along with a $5000 signing bonus). 11 contestants will follow the typical reality show formula: Live in the same house, compete in challenges, etc… They’ll be voted off by a panel of judges who will critique their performance in said challenges & I’m assuming their behavior as well. The series will launch on the Playstation Network on February 18th for both the Playstation 3 & the PSP at no cost. I would say that they are being generous by making it free, but for some reason I just can’t see anyone actually paying for it anyway. I know, I know, I should be so negative about it considering I have yet to see any of it. It’s just that the entire reality show phenomenon is wearing thin on me anyway, but add it the premise behind this one, & I’m already not interested. Seriously, if you want to test games, do your homework & get on with one of the many firms out there that do game testing. The requirements are as high as you might think. The main thing is to live in a city where game development occurs, as you typically won’t find testers getting paid relocation nor will they be doing any telecommuting. With all that said, I’ll give the show a shot. I’ll watch the first episode (there will be 8 in total), but if I’m not sold on the first one, I doubt I’ll catch the rest. What are you thoughts? Will you tune in, so to speak?
