I would ask if anyone remembers Universal’s 1991 comedy Drop Dead Fred, but my memory-challenged wife already answered that. All it took was one glance at the above banner as I was making it & she blurted out ”Oh, Drop Dead Fred! I loved that movie!”. I’m assuming this reaction is the primary reason Universal decided to resurrect the film.
The original starred Phoebe Cates (my childhood crush) as Lizzie & Rik Mayall as her imaginary friend Fred. As a child, Fred was great, protecting Lizzie from her childhood problems. As an adult, Lizzie learns that Fred isn’t going to be as much of a help as he was when she was younger.
Dennis McNicholas (Land of the Lost) will be penning the remake as a starring vehicle for Russell Brand. Many have said over the years that the original didn’t live up to it’s full potential. With that in mind, the studio wants to take it into a new direction. They are looking at a more Beetlejuice feel, creating a whole world around the idea of imaginary friends. Russell Brand will of course be playing the title role.
No further information is available at this point as the film is still in early pre-production.
