Holiday Gift Guide – The Best Of The Rest

Holiday Gift Guide – The Best Of The Rest
While I had hoped to have several more genre categories, due to time constraints, I’m going to have to combine everything. I’m just a one man show here, so it can be tough to initiate all pieces that I want to see on the site. But, there are a bunch of other games that didn’t make the other guides that should be considered. So here is the best of the rest (20 in total). Look for one more guide by the end of the week (most likely on Saturday) that will cover hardware & other gaming related items. Also look for my Best of 2009 picks sometime in the next 14 days or so along with...

By far the ultimate in-person social experience, the music gaming genre has grown over the years from a nitch novelty to a full blown category. Credit Guitar Hero for taking it to the next level. Sack Boy Blows Out 1st Candle

Sack Boy Blows Out 1st Candle
So, Little Big Planet has now turned one year old. To be honest, it turned out to be a game that had to grow on me as I wasn’t a fan when it launched. For me, it was a hype issue. My anticipation of the game was so (little) big that I was let down when I got my hands on the beta. But over the last 12 months, the little (big) canvas-covered tyke grew on me, slowly but surely. The game may not have been the (little) big explosive hit that Sony would have liked, but it has a decent sized following & it’s a wonderful game to have around if you’re one of those folks who enjoy user...

Kmart’s Black Friday Game Deals

Kmart’s Black Friday Game Deals
Black Friday. One of the few days of the year that actually brings out the multiple personality disorder in me. On one hand, I adore the hunt for the few pricing gems that I want to take advantage of. Thanksgiving morning I crack open the paper & start circling the ones I want, placing said ads in a prioritized order & plotting my course through the city as I fight my way past tons of shoppers still in their slippers & curlers. Get the car parked & it’s a mad dash as I sprint through the parking lot, vault over shopping carts (a big no-no on Black Friday; never use a cart,...

September NPD Figures = No Surprises

September NPD Figures = No Surprises
The NPD sales figures for both hardware & software was released today. Honestly, I can’t say I’m really surprised. Nintendo is still flexing it’s portable muscles while Sony enjoys a nice spike due to the August price drop. Considering how close the PS3 & Wii numbers are, I wouldn’t be surprised if October doesn’t see them swap places since Nintendo saw it’s drop on the first of the month. As far as software goes, was there any doubt that the latest Halo title would dominate the charts? The true test will be to see how it fares in October as it will be...

Rock Band Metal Track Pack Is Official

Rock Band Metal Track Pack Is Official
*sigh* I understood the point of the track packs. There are people out there who have a limited or no access to the Internet, so they can’t download the songs they want. Hence the Track Packs. This way, all Rock Band fans can get some additional music for the game. What I don’t understand is this latest trend of putting exclusive songs on it. As a person who does have an Internet connection, I already have bought all the songs I wanted off the Music Store. So why make me buy them again so I can get one or two songs? That’s just blatant pocketbook rape. For me, this started with...

Guitar Hero 5 Plays With The Man In Black

Guitar Hero 5 Plays With The Man In Black
Making his video game debut, Johnny Cash will be an unlockable character in Guitar Hero 5. At first the excitement kicked in a while back when Ring of Fire was announced as part of the set list. Now, not only do players get that, but they will also have the Electric Honky Tonk bar venue & the Man in Black himself to play around with. Johnny Cash joins the like of Santana and Shirley Manson as unlockable characters for the game. After you check out the latest trailer below (including a look at the Man in Black & the new venue), let me know in the comments of any other characters you would...

Guitar Hero: Van Halen Trailer

Guitar Hero: Van Halen Trailer
I’m actually pretty excited for this one. I grew up listening to Van Halen, so this will be a blast from the past for me. Van Halen has created some of the best rock ever. Having them in their own Guitar Hero title is just a no brainer as far as I’m concerned. I managed to check some of it out at E3 & it’s shaping up very nicely. I don’t know if I would say it’s an instrument seller though. What do you guys think? How many of you have been Rock Band/Guitar Hero hold outs that may finally take the plunge once this one hits shelves on December 22nd? Keep in mind...

Preview: G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra

Preview: G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra
“Yooooo Joe!!” How many of you remember that? I remember running around the neighborhood with my buddies, each of us screaming that phrase as we hunted down the evil Cobra Commander. We would always fight over who got to be Snake Eyes & Duke, & of course we always made neighborhood tag along be Scarlett. We all had a bunch of various action figures (the 3 3/4″ figures will always be the best ones) & some of the vehicles that we would gather up around the TV so we could watch the cartoon. Needless to say, G.I. Joe made a big impact on a lot of childeren of the 80’s....

Playstation Store Gets ‘Fat’
Playstation Blog posted this update for everyone. Most notable, Fat Princess! I played it back in May, really fun & really cool. If you like playing online MP, then $15 is a good deal for this game. Just beware: No matter what anyone says, communication with your team is key, so you will want a head set! Other notable releases: Madden NFL 10 demo for the PS3 & Brave Story for the PSP. Oh, & the 7/30 edition of Pulse… Bookmark It Hide Sites

DJ Hero Mixes A Set List

DJ Hero Mixes A Set List
DJ Hero is still an untested property as far as I’m concerned, even with all the muscle Activision is putting behind the title. From the $120 price tag to the new peripheral, I believe it’s gonna be a tough sell. In fact, I think the recently announced Renegade Edition will be an even harder sell. With that said, I’m still interested. I won’t be able to afford it (3 kids + Christmas = empty pockets), but I would love to give it a go. Especially since it has guitar support, so my wife can join me. The key, as with all music games, will be the track list. It’ll be what...

Planet 51 Gameplay trailer

Planet 51 Gameplay trailer
Games based on animated films are typically not that good. I mean, the kids like them, but they usually fail with anyone older than the age of 12. There are a few exception (Kung Fu Panda), but for the most part, they usually feel slapped together just so it launches in time for the film. I have high hops that Planet 51 follows the Kung Fu Panda route as the film looks really cool. Just the premise: Being on a planet where we are the aliens. How cool would that be? The new gameplay trailer (see below) for Sega’s Planet 51 has reinforced my hopes that they game will be good. Check it out: Bookmark...

Band Hero Trailer

Band Hero is the more family friendly version of Guitar Hero. It’s basically Activision’s answer to Lego Rock Band. Joystiq picked up the latest trailer last night, but unfortunately, no gameplay was show. What you do get is a a general feel for the intended direction of the game. Whereas Guitar Hero aims to the more rock side of things, Band Hero will be more pop/rock. In addition, they have the Party Play mode, which facilitates players dropping in & out at will. A classic karaoke mode is also include for those who just want to sing. Even though the World Tour tracks will be compatible,...
