I woke up to news this morning that Disney had purchased Marvel Entertainment for 4 billion in cash & stock. That definitely came out of left field for me as I didn’t realize Marvel was on the market. The deal would put Disney as the owner of the entire Marvel portfolio, which amounts to over 5000 characters. At this point, the brands appear to be maintained as separate entities. Who knows how things will play out in 5 or 10 years. Anyway, it was announced this morning who will play the love interest in Marvel Comic’s upcoming Thor film (which is being helmed by Kenneth Branagh). Natalie Portman, best known for playing Princess Leia & Luke Skywalker’s mom in the Star Wars saga, has been cast as Jane Foster. The new Star Trek film has had a fantastic opening weekend, bringing in $72.5 million on approximately 7,400 screens. I’m guessing a sequel is pretty much a lock. Richard Dreyfuss will cameo and Ving Rhames will star in Dimension Films’ horror-thriller remake Piranha 3D. Some new info on the long talked about Green Lantern film. At first, it was looking like a throw-away film, maybe a direct-to-DVD title. But now, it looks like it will be a serious tent pole contender. Looks like Warner Bros will be dropping a cool $150 million into it. In addition to that, they’ve hired Martin Campbell, director of Casino Royale, to direct it. I didn’t see anything about a production schedule, but it does look like they will take their money & invest it overseas as Sydney, Australia will be the shooting location. Before seeing ‘Watchmen’, I recommend reading the comic source material or at least watching the motion comics. I say this because unless you’re familiar with the story, you may see it with some incorrect expectations.
